Madison General Insurance Pays Sinohydro Corporation Ksh.134 Million Mwache Dam Flood Related Damage Claim
Madison General Insurance Kenya Ltd has paid Mwache Dam contractor Sinohydro Corporation Limited Ksh.134 million for an insurance claim related to damages the contractor incurred due to heavy flooding in November last year.
‘’There have been extensive rains over the past few months, and they are sometimes cause major damage to infrastructure,’’ noted Mr. Samuel Chege, the Madison General Insurance Managing Director, ‘’ Luckily for Sinohydro Corporation, they had taken a good policy and we have paid for the damages incurred to the project site.’’
A flagship vision 2030 project, the construction of the Ksh.20 billion Mwache multipurpose dam project is aimed at providing water for human consumption and irrigation in the coastal region.
The project is expected to be complete in 54 months, from the start date of April 2023, with Sino Hydro Corporation and Engineering of China being the main contractor.
The claim by Sinohydro was related to flood damage sustained in November 2023. The loss involved damage to construction works following heavy rainfall experienced in the area in November last year. At the time of the rains, Sinohydro had constructed two cofferdams to assist in channelling away the river water from the construction area where they were undertaking excavation works for the main concrete dam wall.
The construction of the Mwache Dam project is meant to harness the floodwaters from Mwache River basin in Kwale County and help tackle persistent water shortages in the coastal region. It is a key pillar for the Coast Water Supply Master Plan which identified the dam as a preferential, viable, sustainable and essential long-term option for water supply to Mombasa and Kwale Counties.
